  7. Well I'd have to say 9600 as that was the speed of my first modem connected to my c64. I must say the look on my parents face after that first $400 long distance bill for the bbs's meant a very short life of that modem. In other words they threw it against the wall.

  9. I don't know cost but depending on how close to the road you are you would need permission from either your state Dept. of Transportation or Dept. of Highways as they own a "right of way" area that expends beyond the road itself. You can see this pretty easily on the interstate as you can see the fences just off the road.
  10. It has been my experience that SATA drives are about 20% faster than IDE hard drives. USB external drives would probably be the fastest upgrade but should probably be used as a backup method. I'm not sure how much performance would suffer reading/writing to the USB.
  11. Is this Dial up account one where they just give you an access number or one with software you have to install. It has been my experience that some ISP software block internet connection sharing.

  13. here's a few places http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html http://www.linuxiso.org/ http://www.ubuntu.com/download
  14. I got started when I learned how to program my C64. I enjoyed making it do what I wanted. It was always fun to see the looks on my friends faces when my computer did something they hadn't thought about . Start out small learn whatever operating system you are running inside and out. Learn a programming language. Pick one area of hacking and learn it well then choose another area. I think that when many people are new they get overwhelmed. Step 1 Learn to own your box. Step 2 Learn to own the programs running on your box. Step 3 Learn to own your network. I think you can figure out the rest.
  15. Linux has more readily available network tools. Sure there are some ports (to windows) for them, but the linux versions work much better.
