  1. Philadelphia will be wireless.

    Cool, now everybody can be on the same, happy, unencrypted wireless network. If I ever drive through Philly the average joe shmoe with any knowledge with Ettercap or Ethereal or Cain will be able to pick up credit card number and socials of everyone in the city . lol. I sure hope thats not true, especially because wireless is so insecure. If some malicious attacker got in to that they could create some chaos with the traffic. I like technology and like being connected to the interweb but I wouldn't want to be unencrypted with everyone else. I mean, with all those people connecting to the internet on a wireless network i don't think it would be unlikely for some attacker would try to steal information and spy on people. Heck, maybe the government is fufnding the multi-billion dollar project so the fbi can spy on everyone. I personally would not move to or even visit a city because of their wireless network. Frankly, I'd be scared shitless because privacy conerns lol. On the other hand, I wonder how hard it's going to be to sniff someones user and pass so it can be used as a free internet access. edit: the site auto-logged me in as mario, I'm only using my new handle: freeman.

    I port scanned whoppix.net and found port 21 open.     I have own computers, I'll call them A and B. A is viewing webpages. B is using ethereal and can see the packets of the webpages. Is there a way to translate http ethereal packets into webpages?

    First, heres my lan setup: There is a wireless Netgear router. The router is a DHCP server and DNS server as well as the gateway to the internet. I have a Fedora Core 3 desktop computer and a laptop that dual boots XP and Mepis. There are a couple other windows computers on the network. In Windows, as you probably know, you can ping computers by the lan IP address (usually 192.168.1.x) or by the computer name. In Linux, I set the hostname file to the name 'LinuxLaptop'. While computers can ping the linux laptop by the IP address, they cannot ping it by the name in the hostname file. When I try to ping it, the computer just says 'hostname unknown.' or something along those lines. Is there a way to make the linux computer with the name LinuxLaptop tell the router its name so when the other computer asks the router to resolve 'LinuxLaptop' it knows what IP address to translate it to? On a less related notes: - linux computers cannot ping computers running windows on the lan by the computer name. - Is there a linux command similar to the windows command "netview"? thanks
  10. I have a home network, with a Netgear WAP. The WAP auto-assigns IP addresses to computers in my home network. My laptop (hp pavilion zd7000) can boot Windows XP and Linux, (Fedora Core 3). The laptop has a built-in wireless ethernet card that it uses to connect to the WAP. When I boot into Windows XP, I can connect to the network, and surf the internet. When I boot into linux, the OS does not see my wireless home network, and I don't think it sees my built-in wireless ethernet either. It also doesn't see my sound card. My wireless network card can be activated/deactivated with a special button. My laptop's speakers's volume is also controlled by similar buttons.The wireless network is deactivated because it is not activated during boot, and these special buttons don't work when using Fedora. Do I need a special driver to turn on the wireless network card? Thanks BTW- My desktop runs Fedora only, and has a wireless network card (but not built-in). The desktop can connect to the wireless network and to the internet. The desktop can also play music, so the sound card is working too. This means it is probably the built-in part of the laptop's wireless card and speakers that is causing the problem. This new topic is posted from my laptop in Windows XP.
