  1. What did you select at the options screen? Does the screen refresh/flicker before it hangs? Try booting off backtrack on a usb stick.
  2. In Linux, the two of the most useful commands I know are 'man' and 'apropos'. 'man' displays the manual for a given command and even for c standard library functions. To use, just type "man command-you-want-help-with". 'apropos' searches the man pages for commands related to key words you are searching for. For more info just look at "man man" and "man apropos". As for telnet, it is rarely used anymore and has been replaced by ssh. ssh has the functionality of telnet in addition to encryption and a variety of other neat features like x-forwarding, port-forwarding, ... As for port scanning, you should look at nmap.
  3. I'd like to start going to maryland meetings, also. Is anyone else interested? We only had 1 meeting. There were only two people there and we decided that Union Station was a poor meeting place. I went inactive and the meeting died completely. Contact me if you are still interested.
  4. This conclusion is flawed. Just because A leads to B, does not automatic mean that if you have B you can reverse it to A. Hash functions are deterministic - meaning that two identical or equivalent inputs will generate the same hash value. I can have an infinite amount of different inputs 'Collection A' that will generate 'hash B'. Meaning that if you know 'hash B' you don't know which of the infinite inputs of 'Collection A' was used to create that 'B'. example hash function: function hash(input){ return "a"; } Your logic of "a hashing function, the output is a straightforward function of the input, so we can reverse it." only applies to a function which has a single unique output for every (infinite amout of) possible inputs. example: function func(input){ return input & "a"; } //edit: Note, I have not downloaded/read the attachment Correct me if I am wrong, but it is not really a deterrent to have multiple things hash to the same value. If every element in collection A hashes to B, then you would only have to find one element of collection A(for the purposes of password cracking, etc..). The reason that hashing is usually referred to as a one way function is because it takes very little calculation to get from A to the hash of A but a lot more calculation to get from the hash of A to any element that would have the same hash as A.
  5. I am interested as well.
  6. hackerslab.org went down a long time ago. I found it a few years ago; it died just as I got to like level 3.
  7. This is a reminder that the next meeting is this Friday! Union Station @ 2pm
  8. I just got my new laptop (M50Vm-b1) and set the supervisor BIOS password and the user BIOS password. I then set the BIOS user access to "view only". From this point on I cannot change any settings in BIOS because it never asks me to enter the supervisor password. I have ran tools to find the motherboard name so that I could download the BIOS ROM image from asus and flash the BIOS but I have been unsuccessful (motherboard name=unknown). Please help me either flash BIOS or use the supervisor user in BIOS.
  9. This is the reply from Tech Support: The problem is that I can't find the .rom to flash the BIOS with. I think I can find the rom image if i can find my motherboard name. --------------EDIT----------------- Never mind, i found it. I have flashed the BIOS and it restored the user access to full access but did not wipe the passwords. That is acceptable.
  10. I have tried that, it does not accept the supervisor password as the user password. I am pretty sure that I have been entering the correct supervisor password because I was asked to enter it twice when setting it. I don't want to sent it back to reset the password yet; I would like to pursue other options first.

  13. I am thinking about buying a bare bones laptop and customizing it to save money. I have built custom desktops before so I don't think I will have too many problems assembling the laptop. I don't need too much storage (I think I would even be happy with 80GB) but I do want a good processor and memory with a decent graphics card. I am going of to college so this laptop will have to replace my desktop (run multiple virtual machines, some gaming, and other resource intensive tasks). So far I have picked the following parts: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819111001 - processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227251 - ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822148307 - hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16856172001 - bare bones laptop
  14. No, pgp is not just for encrypting e-mails. If you can encrypt the text you send in an e-mail why wouldn't you be able to use it to encrypt regular files? However, I would recommend using TrueCrypt. Also, if your files are encrypted, why would you need a special way to delete them (especially since TrueCrypt provides plausible deniability). Anyway, I would have to agree with Ohm that writing random data over a file is good enough.
  15. How did the meeting go, and when is the next one? It was just me, myself, and I . Like I said, the next meeting will be the third Friday of next month (Aug 15th). If no one responds to this thread, I will try to contact people that posted in the past two weeks before the meeting.
  16. Next meeting is at 2:00pm on Friday the 18th in the Center Cafe - inside Union Station. The meetings will now be every 3rd Friday of the month. During the last meeting we had trouble finding a location with both wifi and power so please bring your laptop fully charged. If you plan on coming, please contact me. However, I will be there unconditionally.
  17. Have you tried Alternate Data Streams (ADS)? http://www.ethicalhacker.net/content/view/115/24/
  18. If you are looking for more than just increased disk space from having multiple hard drives, you can try to setup RAID. I would suggest RAID 0, this theoretically will double the speed at which you read/write to your hard drive and the amount of total space. However, data corruption is a little more likely to occur. ------------Basic Explanations------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/393 http://www.pcworld.com/article/132877-1/ho...on_your_pc.html
  19. Are you running on a limited account? You need to have administrator privileges in order to start WebGoat. If you cannot get administrator privileges or if WebGoat does not work for some other reason, try downloading the DVL(Damn Vulnerable Linux) live CD and boot from it. The live CD has WebGoat installed with many other different tools and challenges that you may find useful. http://damnvulnerablelinux.org/
  20. No, for someone to be able to access a computer behind a router you would need to setup port forwarding. For example, you would forward port 80 on the router to your apache server running on 192.168.1.2. This way when someone accesses [your-external-ip]:80 they would communicate with 192.168.1.2. Also, if you have an ssh server setup(and port forwarding to the server), anyone with access to the ssh server would be able to access the other hosts behind your router.
  21. There is a meeting on the 14th (this Saturday) at around 2 pm. Please contact me if you are planning on coming.
  22. The meeting was not perfect but I still had a good time and have absolutely no regrets; Mubix was very generous (offered to pay for my meal), intelligent, and cool. Mubix and I looked for a good location inside Union Station where we would be able to host the meetings. Surprisingly, we did not find many places with accessible power sources and "public" internet access like we had hoped. We were able to unplug a lamp inside a restaurant (in which we got a free meal... but more on that later) and hook up our laptops. We ordered food and discussed the structure and contents of future meetings. I suggested that I could present my slide show with a video or live demonstration of various website vulnerabilities at the next meeting. Mubix liked the idea and agreed to peer review my presentation before the next meeting. He then proceeded to set up his own wireless access point in order to demonstrate some hacks. However, murphy's laws kicked in and we( I mean Mubix working hard and me giving supporting comments while devouring my lunch) attempted to get the access point to work with absolutely minimal documentation. We also had some interesting discussions related to XSS, CSRF, and hacking the smarttrip cards. When it was about time to go home, we decided to do some last minute war walking and concluded that we must find a meeting place outside the food court because we were unsuccessful at finding a location with accessible power and wifi after walking around the entirety of the food court. I plan to call/visit a few places near Union Station that will meet our requirements and post my findings. Wondering how we got a free meal? The restaurant that we chose was close to the entrance and very accessible to bugs. During our meal, I spotted a relatively large sized bug crawling on the table. When I pointed this out to Mubix he lost his appetite and notified a near by waiter who then got the manager. Surprisingly, the manager stared at the bug and then looked at us with a big smile... (I still cannot find humor in the situation) and said he would take care of the check. When the manager went away for a minute, I took the opportunity to salvage as much of my free meal as possible (possibly acquired habit from living in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union) before the waiter came back to take away our plates. PS. Shoutz to Mubix for taking the time to come to the meeting despite having to travel hours; I look forward to meeting you again. I hope you guys can come to the next meeting which _will_ be even better.
  23. Ok, great. So we are meeting on the 3rd of May (this Saturday). Does anyone have geek targeted material that they want to share at the meeting? If anyone is interested, I can bring in a PowerPoint(with video) on website vulnerabilities that I am working on for my Senior Project.
  24. It looks like we have agreed on Union Station. So lets pick a time and date to meet there and scout around for a nice place to hold the meeting. I would be able to go at the following times: Sunday 04/27/08 - any time Friday 05/02/08 - after 4:00 pm Next weekend (05/03/08 and 05/04/08) - anytime PS. I was beginning to think we would not get enough members. Fortunately, I was wrong.
  25. I don't understand how it is possible to have so many people on these forums and have so few interested in hacker meetings in Maryland. There were more people interested in this idea last year... I will try to spread the word some more but I do not have much influence because I am relatively new here. Mubix, I hope we can gather up one or two more people and have a meeting setup pretty soon. Having a successful meeting might get more people interested. Mubix, did you have a specific place in mind when you suggested Union Station?
