  1. I'm looking to upgrade from my current Dell and I'd like to know what you guys think is the best machine. I don't want to spend much more than $1500 but I want a laptop that can handle wardriving, WEP cracking, and any of the Linux LiveCDs that I can throw at it. It will be a mainly WinXP system with some virtual machines on it and I'd like to have at least 2gb of ram. The screen can be 15" and I'd like it to be as thin and light as possible. If anyone has some good options, please let me know. Thanks
  2. I'd love to setup a DC++ I just have a hard time finding other students that have enough stuff to make it worthwhile to setup. I have no idea how to find people that are already on a hub either. There's plenty of people that would like to join it and download the music that I have but I'd like to get some stuff in return...
  3. ok, fair enough BT doesn't work even if you encrypt the port and keep a private tracker. So, is there any way to remotely DL BT files on my home computer and then just download them from the home computer later at my leisure?
  4. That's why I want to maybe run some diagnostics and some logging programs of my own to figure out if they are doing something to the connection or if there are just that many people online. I realize it can be a sticky situation but no one seems to know much about this issue around here... Can I ask what University you attended?
  5. Alright so I've been playing it pretty safe while on the schools network and I've only downloaded a few movies here and there over BT and ONLY with a private tracker. I was running uTorrent and I had encryption enabled. For the first week of school my speeds were really fast and I'd push almost 700kb/s most of the time. As soon as the file finished downloading I would delete the torrent and stop seeding. Like I said, this worked for the first week. Then, my speeds slowed WAYYY down. Now I'm happy to get 2kb/s out of each torrent and maybe a max of 10kb/s total. My browsing speeds seem to have slowed down quite a bit as well. Page load times are around 10 secs on average, maybe higher. If I unplug the cable and plug back in speeds jump for a little bit and then go back to their previous limitations. I did some speed tests before the slowdown and now after the slowdown and they come out around the same give or take. My computer is registered on the network and I'm pretty sure the MAC is associated. when I first launch a browser it takes me to a page where I've got to enter my campus username and password and agree to terms. My question is, how can I find out for sure if they are limiting my download speeds in some way. And, is there anything I can do to get my D/L speeds back? I cannot live with downloading a 60mb torrent in 2 days due to slow speeds when I'm supposed to have a 5mb down and 3mb up connection at my disposal. I was told that they watch the network but I didn't think it would be this closely...especially the first week of school. Thanks for the help in advance and I'm sorry if this comes across as n00b but it's very frustrating and I've tried all the things I could think of to figure it out. EDIT: Using RapGet, I've got 3 simultaneous downloads all going at around 100 kb/s. Right now browsing seems to have sped up as well. But I'm here to bet as soon as I bring up uTorrent, it kills all that. Do you guys think using a different client would help?
  6. Someone tried using the forgotten password form on ebay to get my password and I've got a feeling I know who it is. I've got the IP address that the request was made from and I made a WHOIS query so I've got the address that it came from. I was just wondering how I'd go about getting more information on it. For example, I'd like to find an email address or a name that is used by that IP. Any Ideas?
  7. After carving the disc an manually going through lots of those files I unplugged the drive and connected it to my laptop, it read just fine. I installed SP2 on the new system and the problem was fixed. Sorry for all the trouble but this info will be useful for the future
  8. I started carving and all the files seem to be there...although it only shows 167gb in photorec even though I had the thing filled with around 350gb of data. So, my question is. Is there any way to restore the drive so I don't have to carve all the files and then rename everything? I mean I've got an 80gb music library that I don't want to crawl through and rename every track even if I can do it using Media Monkey or some kind of Music Manager...it would just take WAY too long. I'll continue to carve the drive if there is no other way but I'd appreciate any input.
  9. Yeah, I definitely thought about it but I kinda of got ahead of myself. I finished all the backup last night and this morning I wanted a new OS installed so I just booted the disc and went at it not thinking. Now I lost a shit ton of data and I'm going to have to re-organize everything once again.
  10. Alright I'm kind of in a panic right now....I reinstalled windows and before doing so I backed everything up that I was going to need on my D drive which is a completely seperate hard drive than the C drive which windows is installed on. So, after getting everything I needed, I started reinstalling XP Pro on the C drive. The whole setup was fine and i reformatted the C drive and didn't touch the D drive at all. I boot up for the first time and my computer recognizes the D drive as being RAW with no data on it....WHAT THE HELL. I've literally got 500 gig of irreplaceable data including pictures and movies that aren't backed up anywhere else on that drive. In preferences it says 0 Bytes of free space and 0 bytes of used space... What the hell did the Windows install do to my disc?! And more importantly, how can I get that data back without losing it for good?!
  11. If I use Azureus to DL along with the I2P NETWORK plugin and Safe Peer plugin you think I'd be fairly safe? I don't know a whole lot about the network yet other than lots of students trade music on the intranet.
  12. Hey guys, I'm going to be heading to a major university here in a few months and from what I've heard, it's heavily watched for downloading. I won't be able to live if I can't download music or video files. I use mostly torrents but I use emule once and a while if I can't find a torrent. What do you guys think the safest way is for downloading on campus? Thanks
  13. Ok, my friend brought me his laptop that he had installed Windows Vista on...big mistake first of all. And, he used a friends key to activate the software. Well, now he can't boot into windows or get to any of his files until he activates with a valid key. He doesn't want Vista on it anymore and I'm just going to install XP again for him. But, I need to save all his files. What is an easy way to do it? Or, is there an easy way to get the computer to boot up one last time so I can snag all the files real quick?
  14. This may sound really weird but it interests me quite a bit. I was just thinking that it would be nice to data mine all my Facebook content. In say 10 or 20 years it would be cool to go back and view what I was writing to people and what they were writing to me along with photos I've shared and they've shared. I know the government is big on this right now so there has to be a way to do it. The only thing is how....?
  15. Stank, I'm glad you're still around. I remember when you were planning to head out....thanks for staying. Now, how can I get my site signed up for Yahoo? Since you're one of the beta testers can you get other people into the program like google has done with Gmail?
