Well, I'm in the process of downloading CD 1 of FreeBSD so once that finishes, I shall proceed to install that on my Linux partition. Any notes of things I should look out for or do during the install would be great. From what I've heard FreeBSD rocks. So let's hope that is true.

haha, yeah, I at one time tryed to learn such switching skills...But I can't turn to Slack... CURSE YOU COMPAQ! But I plan on installing Slack on a box I'll be getting soon. But anyway, I have no flash drive, so no worries with that. Hopefully this won't be too much of a problem to install.

Wow... I'm confused now. Ok, so now, I've got two partitions on my drive and I'm not formatting windows to install FreeBSD... Not gonna happen right now. But alas, I'm confused as hell about the Start/End of the disk things. There is one that start at 42(add a bunch of digits here) then ends about 100 later, there's also the little tiny one left over from the previous linux install. Then there is one from the 42 to 78. I think the one from 41-78 i windows seeing as how that one is 20 gigs and it says something about it being the size above it. However, I have a lot of stuff I consider important on my windows partition and I don't want to risk guessing 50-50... Again, partitions have kicked my ass periodically... Time to google now that I'm done complaining. *runs off to his favorite search engine*

I went ghetto and took a picture of the screen so you can know what I mean.

Do you have two hard drives, or just one?

Just one drive. But I am determined to get this thing up sometime this week. I plan on working at this until I get it once I have a day off of work this week.

Well, I apparently got rid of SUSE, and installed the FreeBSD boot manager, however I have yet to successfully install FreeBSD itself. It's complaining about needing a swap partition. So I must try to create one of those now. However I'm not sure as to how without formatting everything again and starting over...blah...

Partitions and me don't get along well if you remember from previous episodes...

ever heard of the FreeBSD handbook? http://www.freebsd.org/handbook.
Detailed instructions.

Imagine what a little bit of site searching will do...

Yeah, I looked thru it a little bit a few days ago. It's the second link on google searching for "freebsd". But either way, it's installed now, but seems to be text only, oh well, it'll help me learn the command line faster this way.

Yeah, it has a Linux emulator thing in it. But from what I know, the operating system itself is text based I believe. But I'll look into it.

The Linux emulation is so you can execute Linux binaries. You dont need it to run X.Org or a desktop manager.

I assume you installed from 5.3-RELEASE ?

Did you install X.Org and Gnome or KDE during the install? If you didnt then execute the command 'sysinstall' and place the install CD in the drive. Add the X.Org and Gnome or KDE Packages.

Now as root execute the 'xorgconfig' and follow the steps.

Now execute the 'xinit' command.

If that fails, then you may need to add the line 'exec startkde' or 'exec gnome-session' in the .xinitrc file in the users home directory. Execute the 'xinit' command again.

Edit:

I dont want to sound like a elitist dick giving out the old RTFM answer. But the FreeBSD handbook (http://www.freebsd.o...book/index.html) is very good and it explains everything on installing and configuring your install.

I believe I installed Gnome. I'll do that, but I think I want to mess around with the command line only version for a little bit.

As far as sounding elitest and all, I know what you mean, I've said it myself on more than one occasion. Thing is, I never asked for help for a GUI... Once I saw the text based version, I thought I'd learn command lines better, and thus never asked for help to get one. But nonetheless, I thank you very much for the help anyhow.

It's allright man, I know exactly how you feel, I hate when people ask the simple stuff and refuse to look for themselves. No harm done.
