Last night on my local news, they did a segment about Caller ID spoofing. They explained how it's being used by telemarketers, bill collectors, "hackers", and criminals. They were interviewing a guy that works for Verizon in Boston, and he said that they have equipment that can detect Caller ID spoofing. What happends is, when this equipment detects spoofed Caller ID data, it sends "Out Of Area" as the CNAM information. He went on about how he hopes other phone companies will implement this equipment soon. It looks like this will be the end of Caller ID spoofing in Massachusetts...

I wish I had this segment on tape...

YO, this is pretty wild!! Do you really think they can detect this?!?! Im kind of iffy on this. I think theyre full of shit. I think maybe they could detect random things, such as 1-6 digit number, 8-9 digit numbers, 10 digit numbers all with the same digits (666-666-6666), and shit like that. But i dont think they could detect that 212-867-5309 isnt really calling Fenway Park.

But hey you know what you SHOULD DO RIGHT AWAY!?!? Call up the local news station that you saw this on and say you would like to get a copy of that broadcast. They may not give it to you for free but im pretty sure they do shit like this. Also id really like to get that guys name who was interviewed....Id like to give him a call....

Is there an article about this on their website? I wanna see this!!!

Their site usually has the entire news broadcasts available to stream. Once this one is on there, I will post the link.

No, WHDH 7 News.

Dooh, I'm sorry I missed it, I'll have to watch their site.

They probably got a Verizon Tech from the office that is (quite literally) across the street from their office. BSTNMABO, for those of you curious.

10102880 doesnt really have anything to do with this tho. its different. 10102880 is useful for changing your ani/cpn when calling things like 800 numbers. when u make calls using 1010288 it sets the the ani/cpn to nothing. its just blank. i dont know exactly what shows up when if you were to get a call from someone using it but it would probably just be blank or say unavailable anyways.

The only thing I can think of is the CO is looking at the BTN(ANI) and if the BTN is a 'known' ANI used for spoofing(i.e. Bevocal's ANI would probably be known for spoofing) then they set the CNAM to say out of area, but this doesn't really help any for 2 reasons;
1) the phone number is still being spoofed!, unless they're actually sending Out of Area to the end user w/o phone number.
2) Even if they're sending 'out of area', you could spoof to your cellphone, a calling card, or something else that passes CPN, and have that forwarded to your target, it's doubtful that some obscure calling card or cellphone pseudo ANI would be a 'known ANI' for spoofing. Sending "Out Of Area"s to the end user is pointless anyways, it brings us right back to the dark age of not knowing who's calling, which spoofing in it's self does. Why oh Why do we have Caller ID? someone please tell me! Oh btw, Vonmag put their article I wrote for them up for online viewing;

I think it's going a bit far to say that there's no benefit to this. If the caller id is spoofed, then the called party thinks they know who's calling, when they don't. If they revert to "out of area", then at least the called party knows that they shouldn't answer the phone with a long series of explictives, since they don't know who's calling.

I think i know how they know who's spoofing though. They just listen for a 2600 blast.

thats kind of weird if a switch is setting its own CNAM entries for outside numbers. is that possible even?

I can't wait for them to put that video up. I really want to watch it again. All I know is, the guy's name from Verizon they were interviewing is Jack Hoey.

He can be contacted at:

617-743-4760

or

john.p.hoey@verizon.com

Today WHDH uploaded new editions to their site. They skipped 10/14/04's 11:00 PM edition, and put up 10/21/04's edition instead. I'm pissed off. :angry:

If anyone really wants to find out more about this, try contacting Jack Hoey via the contact methods I posted earlier...
