does someone here have a list of a majority of the ports a computer has and what each port is used for? i've been playing with the logs on my router and was seeing port #'s coming up and was curious as to what type of connnection someone or thing is making with my box. i know that http is 80 and ftp 23 but i don't know what 12542 is or some of the other ones i've seen.

Go to http://www.caida.org...l-dev/0101.html and download ports.zip, there should be a list of all ports and what program that uses them.

you might already know this, but ports 1024 and lower are the more well known ports. everything above can do what ever it pleases (thats actually any port) but its usually known for setting up connections and what not. there are popular services for things above 1024 though.

By the way ftp is port 21, 23 is telnet
