Many people still wardial in this day and age. You would be surprised how many dial-up systems are still in use. I still use ToneLoc, I think it's the best wardialer ever written. It's extensive options and flexibility makes it a great choice for a wardialer.
What kind of devices you ask? I assume you mean the types of systems. You're going to find many UNIX systems, a ton of them, among *NIX systems, you will almost always find Cisco routers, etc. If you wardial toll free numbers, you will find a mixed bag of interesting systems. I've seen a lot of systems on toll free exchanges that belong to the US Government.

I wardial from my home. I've been doing it for a long time and have not once received a complaint from Verizon.

i think handscanning and wardialing should have two different purposes these days tho. handscanning is for finding cool error messages, milliwatts, and other random telco test equipment. wardialing is really only good for finding carriers. if your looking for systems connected to dial in modems then wardialing is the shit. i suggest doing both. but stay safe and dont do anything sketchy and youll be fine.
