all it is is just a phone with a 9v battery on the green wire.
i have an article on it that i used, out of the "Hacker Information Report" Issue #9.
hack canada has the article up coupler.txt.
check that out. its pretty straight forward. if you need any more help, let me know.

No they do a relay with the phone operator. That person types on a TTD, and the operator places the call and talks for the person typing. It's cool because the operator has to say whatever you type down.
do phones used for deaf people use acoutic couplers to do the translation?

use very long hard to spell words a lot and talk fast. Legally the relay operators are not supposed to say anything they don't receive from the tty connection. with the exception of "could you repeat that" and the like. i got a noob operator and she got lost and kept saying "slow down, i can't type that fast". she also had to read back what she had so far so i could repeat myself from that point. i had a feeling that was going to be her last relay call. it's a very dick thing to do, but i like messing with people.
