I recently compiled a shiny new 3.5.7-gentoo Linux kernel and was hoping to change the output of uname -r to something custom. I could always use an alias to make it seem like uname -r was returning something interesting like, "robot_heart_2.1", but I'd rather have the kernel name genuinely be customized. Does anyone know how to go about doing this?
Is it possible to change uname -r output?

Reporting in.... I tried it. It was a bad idea. I recommend just setting an alias so that it looks like you have a weird kernel name. Don't mess with kernel headers, don't mess with kernel source, bad things happen, and I've learned my lesson.

You can at least easily modify the suffix for your specific build. It's a kernel config option (iirc it's even visible in `make menuconfig`)
