First thought:
If you want to solder wires to it... you .could. tap the lines going to the LCD, RE it's instruction set.. parse that with a microcontroller, then have the microcontroller emulate a keyboard event.
On Second thoughts:
that little 2x5 10 pin double header there... could that be a Jtag?
and the traces going to the 2x16 socket kinda make me lean that way too. the 2x16 might be a gold mind for a diagnostic/test port.
Wonder if that 2x16 somehow makes its way out the parallel port on the back? Wonder if there's a way to send serial data through that port on the back? You're just going to have to start studying that thing hard core.
If you don't have a logic analyzer, get yourself one. You'll love it for mysteries like you have here.
BTW: what is this thing for? stock trading or something?
