how can I create a conf file in ubuntu

probably stupid question I know - I want to create a conf file in the etc/modprobe.d folder

You need to be root.

For Ubuntu or one of her Debian sisters...

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/whatever.conf

[edit typo]
