The last time I was near the Williamsburg area was 2007, but they had a shockingly large amount of ex-Bell Atlantic CO phones there.
EDIT: Phone booths are big money for Verizon in New York, since they mean free advertising space. As of a couple years ago, there was an article about them even installing new payphones.
Four years makes a big difference. AT&T completely got out of the pay phone biz, while Verizon is hanging by a thread.
I was in an airport last week and saw a few Verizon pay phones, but that's about the only place I've seen them recently. I assume they keep them in public places such as aiports and train stations if they're making money or if the landlord is willing to pay the $$$ to keep them there, even if they're money losers.
