what confuses me is how can / does #5 afford to buy #3... isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

Qwest has something like seventeen billion dollars of debt. They've been looking for a buyer for a while now, if I remember things correctly.what confuses me is how can / does #5 afford to buy #3... isn't it supposed to be the other way around?
