Payphone error

I went to a payphone at a gas station in town to play around with it.
I dialed the MCI ANAC (1-800-444-4444)and it read me the ANI.
I then called the number I received not expecting anything to happen.
The payphone started to ring, I was like wow this is pretty cool.
I was hoping to be able to talk once I pick up handset on the payphone but I keep getting this error
"Error 48, Error 48, Error 48, (Beeep)" and I get disconnected immediately.
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the error or anything.
Is it a misconfiguration? Also do a lot of payphones allow dialing in?
I don't know what kind of payphone it is.... COCUT? or whatever else there is.
I plan on reading some stuff on what a COCUT is and how to tell what type of payphone it is and why, just haven't got around to it yet.
I just started to venture in playing around with things in telephony, so I'm clueless.

Basically its a payphone (correct me if i'm wrong) owned by private companies. For example if I found a payphone not by BT in the UK it would be a cocot. Not sure about America but if you've seen a non standard pay phone it would most likely be a colcot.
I cant help too much, my phreaking skills suck. Just know what i've managed to pick up from the early episodes of off the hook :tongue:

most payphones do not accept incoming calls...
some payphones do have a modem inside of them that the owner can call up from a remote location and access certain information about the phone like how much money is in the phone...
i would assume that the error is coming from the payphone itself.... but the only way to really find that out would be to connect a butt set to the dial tone before it enters the payphone pedestal and call into the number

The modem is because the owner of the payphone calls up the phone with a modem and has software that gives information on daily earnings, price info, and various configurations. When I was younger, my dad owned a majority of the COCOTs in Oklahoma City. The software was pretty tight.

The ANACs I try calling are a dead giveaway this dates a few years back. I got a little frustrated with the phone eating my change whenever I got an error recording without SITs, so I moved onto an ACTS phone almost immediately after.
Anyway, as for the payphone you found, that sounds like a Protel model - a fairly modern one at that. Here's a manual for the model I'm thinking it is. The error cause code near the end of the PDF should tell you why it intervened.

Yeah, that phone definitely looks very similar to the Protel. I haven't had a chance to go back yet but I will here soon.
As for ACTS and SIT do you have information what these things do (these are new terms to me)? All I could find are Wikipedia entries that really didn't help.
