I found this on a piece of equipment that a qwest technician was using at a construction site on the other side of town. I've got pictures of the equipment, and I'll post 'em in an hour or so when they're uploaded.

Edit:

I was just informed that it was on a list

Good find. I believe I know where this is located, although I haven't been down there yet.

This number gave me a weird recording when I called a few days ago. Now all I get is a reorder. Try dialing it through various carriers and see what you get:

Some numbers I found playing around in a remote terminal...don't ask...

and YES, the RT seems to have some kind of alarm system.

CF Desk -- 868-5570 (npa is 936 i believe, but could also be 281)
Unknown -- 800-817-1277
OW Term -- 281-592-0494

That's what I could find. I haven't called them yet, so I don't know what exactly they are. An SBC tech had written these inside the door.

I've found quite a few numbers inside remote terminals around my area. I only wish I still had the papers with the numbers on them.

888-355-6321

It's an ANAC (CPN), ringback service, or keypad tester. If you hang up without choosing one of those, it calls you back and reads your CPN back to you.

The number on the caller ID when it called back was 904-317-3215. This is apparently the non-tollfree version.

Both identify as Bellsouth's test line. Can anyone outside of Bellsouth territory get through on the tollfree one? (I'm in NPA 864)

Same here. When I'll get home I'll spoof a QWest CPN to it and see if it gives me a reorder. I'm in the 718/212/347/646/917/516/631/914 Verizon area.

The 800 gave me an odd reorder tone, followed by an even stranger "cannot be reached from your calling area" message. The 904 rang through. I tried both from my cell (661-TMOBILE) and from payphones in the 661-255-xxxx range- same results.

I happen to live 25 minutes from the Georgia (NPA 706) border, so I've got some more data.

The phones at the Georgia welcome center (I-85 southbound):

These are Alltel phones. I got a reorder tone on the tollfree number, and SIT tones followed by "your call cannot be completed as dialed" on the toll number.

A COCOT at a Georgia gas station also gave the reorder on the tollfree, but went through OK on the toll number. Even though I was able to place a call to these phones from my cell, the ringback from the toll number did not ring the phone.

Both numbers seem to work from all types of phones in NPA 864.

So... I'm still not sure from where the tollfree will work. Only South Carolina? Only 864? It's a good hour's drive to get down into NPA 803, so that will have to wait a while. I may be up in NC (704/980) this weekend, so I'll try some more if I am.

That CBCAD from the welcome center phone has really got me curious. Those phones are even in the same exchange as the COCOTS (706-356-xxxx)

Not sure what this is. Found it calling random 800 numbers. It just connects you to some jazz then disconnects after a while.

Edit: 18005734547 seems to do the same exact thing. Interesting.

These numbers remind me of dentist offices, elevators, and fancy stores.
Nice and relaxing. Funny thing is they're paying a few cents a minute for you to listen to it.

At first i thought it was a DATU, cause it plays two low tones and then asks for a four digit passcode.. natas informs me that it is not. Any ideas?

It's an extender (MCI?) I believe. I know I have heard calling cards with the same exact chime and voice as that number has...
