I wanted to get some more information on SIM card duplication for GSM Cell phones. I have seen devices that can do this on websites such as http://www.vavolo.com/, but I am wondering about a few things such as legality issues. Can a person copy their own SIM card and use it in an unlocked phone without any issues from the law? I was also wondering if you can purchase clean empty SIM cards to use as copies, and if anyone knows where to get them. To add this, the weak Wikipedia page states without citation that cloning SIM cards can and usually damages the original card.

Also, I have found a few GSM jammers and interceptors that I was wondering about. How legal are these, and more importantly, do they even work? I was under the impression that they could only be sold to law enforcement and government people, and they cost quite a bit.

If you have seen "The Bourne Supremacy" you will remember the part where he clones the SIM card.

i know that you can clone your sim but i belive that you can only use one at a time. so its not possible as far as i know to have both cards active at the same time. for example if yo uput them both in differnet phones, the phone you turn on first will work but the other one will not. someone correct me if i am wrong about this.

I don't believe GSM security will allow 2 mobile phones with the same SIM to be registered on the network. I suppose you could use one mobile while the other is off?

PHONE1 = P1
PHONE2 = P2

Actually , both phones works in the same time !
Both show network coverage , but only the last one that queried the network will receive the call!
if P1 is calling , and P2 register,signout,or try to call , it will disconnect P1
P1 will try to relog after few minutes!

Having both phone online i the same time can make the GSM carrier suspicious and block your card!

AT&T has started blocking multiple registrations of the same SIM. Most manufactures are starting to do the same. Thats also why at&t now require independent IMEI numbers for each device registering a new SIM. You can still switch the SIM between phones but it wont register 2.

Cortex M3 is correct. The two SIMs will keep trying to register to the network, and tend to fight. Odd things happen as calls in and out from both phones bounce between them depending on what phone is is registered at any time. IT is called a velocity event, and carriers do watch for it.

If you have a fairly new SIM, I wouldn't bother trying to clone it. The SIMs have a counter, and after too many attempts to recover the Ki key, the SIM will lock itself and be worthless.

remember that

Quote

* SIM cards issued before JUNE 2002 most likely are COMP128v1 SIM cards
* Phone book capacity more than 250 entries most likely are COMP128v2 SIM cards
* The first generation of SIM clone card is V1 card. But the operator developed V2 card recently with more encryption. At moment, there is no one can crack V2 card. If your Ki value is (00) (00) (00)…, meant V2 card.

Not quite true, you can roll the dice and try to brute force it, you just run the risk of hosing it by exceeding the counter.

It's possible, just not real practical.

I still have my pre2002 simcard but is there really any benefit to cloning?

If you had SIMs from multiple carries, and wanted to put all of the KI and IMSI pairs on one SIM with the capacity, then yes. Otherwise beyond committing fraud, no.
