Hi,

I've been able to get 3D acceleration to *work* with my ATI Radeon x700 pro on my debian testing box. I'm using the xserver-xorg 1:7.1.0-19 package (locked, the latest version didn't work at all with any drivers, even with ati or vesa for some reason). When running glxinfo it says I have Direct Rendering. However, glxgears is completely black, just like any other 3D app I try to run (tuxracer for instance). I've tried googling without success. Any idea what might be causing the problem? Here is my xorg.conf:

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I've googled for the "(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23" lines, but the bug reports said it wasn't important. If you have any clue, anything that could help, please post...

I don't know about this:

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

You also might want to try getting rid of that VideoOverlay setting if you don't need it.

I've tried that, and it didn't change anything. As for the warning line with the BusID, it still finds the good one as I'm specifying the BusID in my xorg.conf

you could probably find an answer on ubuntuforums. i always find answers on ubuntu and gentoo sites for my suse install, so you should have better luck with debian and ubuntuforums. i've seen there is a known problem with some graphics cards with ubuntu causing black rendering for some apps.

Do you seriously think the device is at fault?

You know what? I used to have an ATI card, which I never got to work with 3D acceleration on Linux. I then bought an nvidia card thinking the drivers would be better. It *worked* for some time on gentoo a while ago. I then reinstalled linux and never was able to get it to work again with 3D acceleration. I then had a new ATI Radeon x700 from my brother's computer. I placed the nvidia card in my second computer and now use the x700 on my main computer. You know what? I still have problems. With both the nvidia and the ati it sucked. I only recently found out that when I changed the AGP aperture size in the BIOS I would at least get an image (with both the nvidia and ati cards I used to get a blank screen, with signal sent to the screen). I was happy to see changing the AGP aperture size allowed me to at least get something to seem to work. I thought the problems were gone until I found out even if glxinfo says Direct Rending: Yes, I will get a black glxgears.

I don't know, I found those while googling. The problem is that they say this bug is purely cosmetic - so it shouldn't give me a black glxgears or black 3D application. something else is wrong.

Okay, this is the weirdest thing that could happen. I just ran glxgears, and it wasn't black. Why the heck on Earth is it working now? The only things I've done since this first post in this thread is update the latest files in the testing repository of debian, I don't even remember what was in there. I also rebooted. I hate this, because I do not know what fixed my problem. Does anybody know if there is a log for what synaptic installs? I want to find out what fixed my problem :S

EDIT: Nevermind, I rebooted, and glxgears is black again. What the heck is going on.

You probably just updated the driver, amd has released some bad ones in the past few months.

then why has it stopped working again, without any driver change?

This is probably not the problem at all, but try making sure your card is seated correctly and there are no screws or anything that have fallen on your card. About a year ago, I was having strange graphics card troubles that went away and came back, and I found the problem was a screw resting on the card.

if that doesn't work, try installing (if you don't already have it) the ATI control panel. Perhaps if you screw with the settings in that enough, you will hit something that fixes the problem.
