I use 1010-288 to call those things all the time. They cant charge you for an error message since they dont supervise. Watch out for the milliwatts though, they do supervise, although AT&T has never tried to charge me for calling them.

sorry but, what does supervise mean? i thought that it meant when the call is actually charged, but you made a distiction.

The actual succession of recordings is fairly standardized across various 4Es, although they do vary from one 4E to another. Some routing information:

104T is White Plains 5 NY (WHPLNY0504T) installed August 1980.
089T is San Francisco 4 CA (SNFCCA2147T) installed June 1985.
024T is Des Moines 2 IA (DESMIADT08T) installed June 1981.

It's interesting that you're getting the 650 area code change recording from Des Moines 2; dialing from Las Vegas (where we're served out of 113T San Bernadino 2 and its typical too-fast phased announcement machine) I hit the area code change recording only once I get to 089T. That makes some sort of sense though, since I imagine San Bernardino has direct trunks to San Francisco.

Interestingly enough, back in the days of AT&T's 4A crossbar network, San Francisco was a small tandem generally used for bay area calls and as a gateway to the Oakland tandem in the Franklin St office (today 070T) which was the main Bay Area tandem for long-haul calls. Of course now with dynamic routing technology, the hierarchy of the old network doesn't really matter anymore.

"Supervises" is just a fancy way of saying "goes off-hook" and "unsupervises," of course, means "goes on-hook." What would be ultra-cool would be talking my local switch technicians into adding polarity reversal upon supervision to my telephone line.

it says "The codes to mexico changed, for help call" then some number, then the same thing in spanish. This is what happens when you try and cram long messages onto machines designed for short ones.
