Okay, I admit it. I am at a loss. Here is my problem.
I am trying to setup a wireless network between my laptop and my office computer. (And hopefully a few more later) I have created a server on my laptop and also one on my office. I cannot get either server to talk and I cannot get either computer to join one of the servers. (Anyone tell me how to access a domain controller?) I have also tried to Remote Access. The office computer does not have an Allow desktop connection and when I try to Connect the office with the laptop I don't know what to use for a login or password.
Both computers are using windows xp 2002 SVP2.
I have sadly just worked on this problem for two hours so, any information you need let me know and I will check.
All help is aprecciated.
(used the wireless network setup wizard to create the two servers)

Let me get this straight... At your office you have a MS server running. Your laptop is running also a server right? You lost me when you mention that both computers are using windows xp...

Which one is it?

yeah you did kinda lose me there with the windows xp 2002 svp2 part. but it sounds like youre trying to setup an ad-hoc connection is that right? or are you trying to setup a VPN connection from your home to your computer at the office?

No, here maybe I can make it clearer.

At my house I have a coumputer in my office. That is the computer I called office and my laptop, which I am typing on now, is a another computer. Mostly I just need to be able to use the printer my office computer is connected to. But my parents also wanted to be able to use the programs from the office computer on the laptop and vice versa.
So, I thought if I set a wireless network I could just share all the files and programs. So, I used the Wireless Network Wizard on my laptop to create a server under my computer name. After I did that, I tried to connect both computers on the server. My office computer could see it but I can't get it to connect or anything. So, I tried to set up a server on the office computer using its computer name. So now I have two computers with two different servers. The office computer sees the server on my laptop but I don't know how to add computers to the server or workgroup.
I tried to use Remote Desktop connection but the computer in my office did not have a "allow this computer to be controlled remotely." option. So I tried to connect to the laptop remotely. It kept saying the account is wrong or the password is invalid and to make sure my domain is correct. I have no domain. My domain is domain_not_set.invalid for both computers. I cannot adjust that unless I am a Windows Domain Controller. Does any one have any Ideas on how to make the computers talk and\or gain access to the Windows Domain Controller.

When I said both computers are using windows xp 2002 sp2, I meant

Each computer is running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 2

If you need more information let me know.

Please correct me if i am wrong here, but XP home does not have the ability to become a server. That may be where your troubles are starting. If you are trying to share a printer, start the wizard and made an ad hoc network. Make the name something you will remember but not too obvious like the default one is. After your create the network on one computer, create it the same way on the other computer using the same network information from the first computer.

For part of this you will need to know your computers names, such as: Office PC, Lappy486, or whatever you labeled the individual computers during the network wizard. Then go to the office computer, open up your printer & fax, right click on your printer and select properties. Select the sharing tab, then set it up to be shared on the network. Yet again, name it something you will remember without being obvious. Then go to your Laptop, go to printers & fax, click add printer and choose a network printer. If everything goes right(and everything is powered on) you should be able to add your printer to the laptop. You may need to install the drivers for the printer on your laptop, but not always. If you cannot seem to get them to see each other, disable the SP2 firewall and try it again. Do not give up if you cannot get it the first time, sometimes windows like to play dumb and pretend it cannot see anything on the network.

For the sharing of programs, well without a true server that has the programs installed on them, your best bet is to just buy a multi volume license and install it on both. Most office student and teacher editions are set up for 3 computers now.

hope this helps!

Ok, what is an ad hoc network and how do I create one?
I followed as much of your advice as I could and it didn't work. I found my computer sees the printer it just reports it as offline. Any ideas?
Thanks for everything so far guys.

ok theres a nice little easy to use program called network magic that will solve all your problems. it will give you am easy to use interface and make it super simple to share files, folders and printers.
