I tried to google, but I really didn't get any good solid information.

What is a scan? A scan is... a scan of about 100 numbers (most of the time) and usually is of the high end or low end of an exchange (when looking for test numbers/strange numbers) A scan of YOUR local exchange's high end (assuming your telephone number is 123-456-7890) might look like this:
123-456-99XX (dial all numbers starting at 123-456-9900 and going until 123-456-9999)
123-456-00XX (dial all numbers starting at 123-456-0000 and going until 123-456-0000)
How do you scan? Some use a wardialer (a program utilizing a modem connected to a phone line to dial numbers for you) and some hand-scan (dial with a phone and their hand) I prefer to hand-scan. I can control everything about it.

I found this info useful, Google doesn't help much when looking for information like this. I think this could be helpful to other new phreaks.
