Ok i'll try to make this short and as non-confusing as possible.

Back Story:
I bought counterstrike source like a year ago because my buddy begged me to play with him. Installed it on my dads computer see'ing as its the only computer capable of running a high end game. Everytime i go to launch the game it crashes before it gets to its splash screen.

Problem Description:
When it crashes it gives me the error that i had a failed module of shaderdx9.dll. So i investigated....

Things i've tried:
- Disableing any firewall or 3rd party program which blocked or restricted any access to anything
- Ran dxdiag with no results
- Updated directx9C
- Deleted and rebuilt Windows Managment Instrument repositorys
- Googled until my heart stopped
- Ran differnt options in the game
- updated and installed AVI drivers
- Cleaned registry viruses/spyware

Though alot of this had nothing to do with the problem at hand it needed done.

What i've learned:
- DirectX9 uses MSinfo, and WMI and both have to work in order for dx9 to work properly
- MSinfo cannot collect info because WMI is missing or currupt

Im at wits end and have no where else to turn. Can anyone give me some insight? Maybe how to roll back directx so i can re-update it. See'ing as its not my computer i cant reformat. Can anyone help?

1st, youre still alive?! Amazing. 2nd, not really General Hacking...

Anyways I don't see that you mentioned updating graphic drivers\video card drivers. I suggest you do that. Also I believe Counter-Strike Source and HL2 and stuff like that can run on DX 7 and 8. I suggest you goto the config tool for the games before trying to launch the game and set DX 8 or maybe DX 7 to see if you get the error then.

Haha yes i am alive and kicking. You make me feel loved  This went in general for lack of better place. If someone finds a better spot feel free to move it.

Anyways I updated the drivers for the ATI card, how ever i have not tried to run the game on dx8/7. Didnt know i could set that. I'll have to check into that and give an update.

Coming from a *nix guy.

Go to the service menu under the administrative section in the Control Panel.
Start the needed services.

Sorry forgot to mention i've made sure all services were running and set to automatic

edit: let me add that the gfx card is a radeon 550 and after viewing the specs it does support shader 2.0 and dx9

Well me and you are both from Michigan so I couldn't forget about a fellow Michiganian.

I don't remember how to change the settings but I know its possible to goto a different version of DX. If I need to I'll boot up a PC with HL install soonish and check.

Actually I think if you create a shortcut and add -dxlevel 70 to the run line, that forces it in 7, and I'd assume 80 would do direct x 8.

-dxlevel 80 -dxlevel 81 and -dxlevel90

Well I'm from Michigan (586), but now I live in Chicago. And unlike most forums they have From: instead of Location:.

Anyways to stay on topic, whenever I had issues with HL2 on peoples machines it was something to do with DirectX9. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Just a update. Trying to launch the game in dxlevel -80 or -70 failed to work. So i un-installed the game then steam and did all that stuff listed above. Then i had the same but different problem. I could not install the game from the cd. So i continued to google around with no answer still. Im pretty sure i know the problem and the only real solution is to format and start fresh. Seeing as its not my computer that is another problem. Ill just have to talk my dad into letting me do so. WHY DID THEY LET DELL SET IT UP!!!! Anywho thanks for the suggestions guys im going to give up for now until i can talk them into letting me reformat.
