I try and play an .asf file that works (pourly) with totem

error reads: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device

what did i do wrong ??

your either starting it wrong or your not in the video group I tedn to add myself to a video group so I do not have ot emss around with configuring and such

mplayer doesnt support all codecs.. in which case u do use something else like vlc.... altho i think you can download other codecs for mplayer, so you might want to check that out

I know this is a little bit off topic here but..... Has anyone gotten DiVX web player to work on linux?? I got the new DIVX codec for linux that was released but could never get the web player to work.

If you're getting an error on the video output device, mplayer probably has support for the codec, but wants you to specify the video out device.
