either way, i'm still glad to see a new search engine showing up. more choices--more competition--more options. also, one feature that really jumped out at me--they've got a creative commons search option. anyway, i'm curious to see how they turn out, and i'm also curious about what you guys think about it.
another plus is the developer forums. there is hardly anyone there yet, but the admins actually seem to be looking for user advice and feedback, so here's a chance to get some ideas out. take this thing apart, see how it works, figure out how to make it better, and *shrug*, it seems like they're listening.
just thought i'd throw a post out and see if anybody's got any input....
late.

I like the preview bar, cuz others have you roll over to see, which pisses me off when you don't mean to.

First I am Daniel Jenkins, owner of the CometQuery search engine and nerd in every sense. First thanks Viscous for posting about CometQuery, truly. If anyone has any comments or would like to understand the API more feel free to post here, I shall check back often so

It looks promising. I didn't see a way (just glanced quickly) to customize it at all. I would rather do away with the HUGE preview image in lieu of more results per page.
Stank, I hate you! I was just setting up to go sleep and NOW you give me a idea. God dammit I hate you SO much, if I am up all night where do I send the bill for the cola? Heh. Customization it is!

After you type a query and hit 'submit query', the text from the box disappears. Okay, so this my not seem like much but, often when I search I'll type in a specific keyword, view the results, then add other words based on my results. Retyping the query every time can get to be annoying not to mention a waste of time.
Just my 2 bits.

You can now turn thumbnails on and off.
It isn't the thumbnails themselves so much as the size of each entry. I have my search engines set to show 100 entries per page and they are short entries with a blurb so it isn't nonstop scrolling. The way it is right now, I only see 2 or 3 results per page. That is a lot of scrolling.
Don't get me wrong, I think what you have is freaking great but I am just making the suggestion that it have an option to not be so verbose. Maybe if I could select a view that showed 3 or 4 columns (use my widescreen monitor) that would fit more on the screen.
Also, I think you should come on binrev radio and talk about the design and programming behind something like this. I would love to hear that episode!

plus, hanging around these forums long enough and you're bound to get some good ideas to throw into cq.

i think what stank is talking about is the actual amount of results per page not the amout that he can see at a time due to resolution settings. on my laptop i have it set at 1200 by 800 and i get 10 results per page when i search on my desktop i still get 10 results per page at a 1920 by 1080 resolution. i think it would be better to have the option to choose the amount of results per page. that way you dont have to click next page time and time again to see more results.

Both actually. I just got home and looked at your 3 column layout.. I like it much better! Now I get 3x10 for a total of 30 links. Now, how about giving me 99 results (3 columns at 33 per column) so that I can CTL+S search the page. (Obviously, if there aren't enough results to fill the page, it just returns what it has already, but you already have that coded)
I can make lots of suggestions, if you really want them. I would love to be involved on the design side of a search engine because none of them, even google, has it completely right yet (although A9 is on the right track).
Basically, My biggest want is total control and customization. Give THE USER the choice (cookie) of 1 column, or 3 columns, or hell even 337 columns of they really want it! Total number of results, even colors/skins, just more control over fine-tuning it. My needs may be different than someone else, who wants those thumbnails. This way, we can each choose for ourselves but we still use the same engine. I am only referring to the functionality on the presentation layer of the whole thing. The code behind it would be pretty simple to tweak.

It's nice to see a fresh look at the search engine. Thought it was cool but one thing I noticed was that some of the thumbnails don't show up, as in the bottom of this search. http://www.cometquer...p;=Submit Query
He is leeching the images from girafa thumbnails (using MSN's account?

Aha. Thats how they do it. But isn't cometquery going to be in legal woes if they are "leeching" ?

Website preview is quite handy (despite fact that it is being leeched from elsewhere.)

It's a pretty cool engine. I'm surprised how much you've spidered.

Yeah, I wasn't complaining about it. I was just inside your base and reading your code. I thought it was funny.
BinRev is hosted by the great people at Lunarpages!
