I've just started to use Linux full time and I'm loving it. What drives me insane is the crappy fonts that come with most distributions. With the link below you can install the same core fonts that windows uses. I'm sure all you Linux gurus on here know how to do this but I'm posting for the newbies like myself.

also look into the true type bitstream vera fonts.

yeah and make sure to turn on font antialiasing, it makes them look much better.
