I can't seem to get my compaq data fax modem (from 98) to work with my linux distro (Lycoris), can any help me, I am new to linux BTW.

Wow, no network layout, no IP configuration, no information on DHCP or Static IP, no information at all!

Try http://www.linmodems.org/. Or better yet, find a cheap, generic hardware modem that is definitely supported.

Umm is $8 too much for your budget? Heh..
Check http://www.pricewatch.com/ for really really great prices from not-so-big-name stores. Just make certain it doesn't say winmodem or softmodem.
