Now here's a question I've been pondering for a while. What's the moral and/or legal consequences for hacking a scam website?

I mean, would a scam operator have the balls to go to the authorities and claim he was hacked and lost money? Or would he just keep his mouth shut and bust ass to try and secure the site better?

For defacing/shutting down a scam website, would that be viewed as a public service?

I second Stank, but in today's climate I wouldn't put it past the man to use anything to bust a "cyberterrorist"...in fact I've heard that the FBI acts upon "recreational hackers," not just cyberterrorists. Boy, sure seems like a blurry line of convenience...

well, i don't know. i remember back in the day se7en used to deface kiddie porn websites. and nothing ever happened to him.

I agree - someone could deface kiddie porn sites all day long w/ impunity. But there's a huge difference between that ilk and scam sites/spammers. (We could even get into the semantics of "scam" sites, being that many scams are legal...)

Looks like the general concensus is that it's ok.

Just wanted to get overall thoughts. But dual, the scams that I'm talking about are strictly illegal - most of the sites I see sell services that they dont deliver on, essentially they steal money under the guise of a business service that never comes to fruition.

Other sites the just really annoy the hell out of me are the ones I get spammed for like 10-20 times per day. And all they are is a database of info that they google searched for and have stored.

And kiddie porn sites should die. I thought they were created to be targets

as far as I know se7en is still defacing kiddie porn sites. he leaves his trade park "rattle snake" picture on each site he defaces.
