Looks like you can get gmail without invite

You just have to give up your cell number.
It has a check box checked by default that says

Save my number for use with future Google Mobile services, such as secure password recovery and SMS alerts.* Learn more

If you had a friend sign up this way you may be able to get his/her pass by borrowing the phone they used for a moment. I don't know if I would like a text from google just because they think the mail they read for me may interest me.

We also want to make it easy for you to receive alerts on your phone when you receive new messages from specific senders or about topics that interest you.
