So has anyone heard anything about this other than what is stated in those articles? Anyone refusing to use this?

Since they are using the Jabber protocol, all I needed to do was go into Gaim, create a new jabber account.
Settings:
Screen Name: [gmail user]
Server: gmail.com
Resource: Gaim
Password: [gmail password]
Alias: [your name]
Now click on "Show more options"
Check "Use TLS if avalible"
Port: 5222
Connect server: talk.google.com
And that's it.

I think it should have a more streamlined process for emailing users that are away. A program like this would have the oppurtunuty to eradicate the line between email and instant messaging.
