I found out they use a database. No special WHOIS queries, no time-consuming traceroutes (why would anyone think they used these??), but a very expensive ($450! LOL!) database. Here's a free sample: click here.

edit: also could anyone show how I would get that information and send it to a log file? Such as if someone visited a website it would log their ip, location, OS, ect and send it to the log file.
