Since I live in Europe it would be quite expensive for me to dial a lot of US (or other countries') numbers. Could skype be modded to fit the bill, perhaps with a pseudo-driver I could hook up with a program like minicom (or some wardriver that works on Mac OS X)? Just a wild stab in the dark here.
Skype as a modem for wardialing?

I may be wrong here but currently Skype does not support making telephone calls to actual numbers. They simply dial other Skype users. Can anyone provide further information on this?

Better avenue: asterisk + IAX provider that offers US termination.

That is incorrect. Skype can be used to call pretty much any number in existence; with very decent rates. Its my primary VoIP service at the moment.
Skype calls to POTS are free if they're under 3 seconds. So I would find it handy
