So I'm walking home today, and I notice a large yellow dumpster. Looking closer, I saw in big black letters "TELEPHONE BOOKS ONLY".

I run over to it, and it was filled TO THE TOP with phone books. Most of them are from last year, but I saw quite a few older ones with the bell symbol on them. I grabbed a few, and I plan to return when there are less people around (it was at a busy intersection, got a few weird looks). Has anyone else seen these?

This dumpster was in Fargo, ND. If you want to find one, try calling you local phone company and ask about phone book recycling.
I am going to try to collect a phone book for every year. So far I have 1981,1993,2004, and 2005. It should make a nice reference collection.

We have them around here. I notice it seems to catch on once a few people put books in. I guess my area is down with recycling. Heh

Yes this is common, just think about how much paper goes into all those phone books. Scan anything you find interesting in the old books.
