Is my laptop dead???

Hi... I was using my laptop (dell 1520) and it suddenly turn off. Now, it doesn't turn on and I don't think it is a low battery problem. I push the power button and nothing! No sound, no light, absolutely dead! I checked the AC adapter and I found out the light is turned off. So I unplugged it from the laptop and the outlet, then plugged back to the outlet (but not to the laptop) and the AC adapter light turned on. But when I plugged to the laptop the light turned off!
With or without the AC adapter plugged to the laptop, it wouldn't turn on!

So.. is my laptop dead? can it be fixed?

Please, help!

a short story from our friend jason scott

# Octothorpe Productions Title: "Transplant" By: Jason Scott Date: 7/2/87

[#] TRANSPLANT

Scott woke up rather harshly. Then he looked around.

The fact he was strapped in a chair was disconcerting. The fact he was in a
little steel cell with posters of Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, and Madonna on the
walls caught him off guard. The fact that there was a large machine suspended
by a large apparatus over him was mildly nauseating. The fact that three evil
looking persons wearing fedoras and trenchcoats and with surgery masks on their
faces were all standing up looking at him made him rather sick.

"Mgggrph," he quipped. He hadn't noticed the gag in him mouth.

"Mgggrph? Really," said the one with black hair, "they DID know english back
in the twilight ages, didn't they?"

"ObbCorch," said Scott. "Bud denagin wee didnph haf shish nn uuur muphs."

The guy must have been a dentist. "Oh, I see. The rag." He reached over and
pulled the gag from Scott's mouth and dropped it into a receptacle to the left
of the chair.

"Thenk Yew," said Scott. "Where am I?"

"Be more original!" piped up the one with red hair. "Simply EVERYBODY says
THAT."

"Well, it's to the point, isn't it? And I wanna know why I'm strapped down in
a chair in a..."

The Black-haired one held up his hand "Quiet. We read the description."

Scott shut up. He continued. "You are in the equivalent of the operating
room of your time. There aren't any diseases of consequence anymore, so we
mostly use these for specalized operations like yours."

"And what, may I ask, is my illness?"

"Oh, no illness on YOUR part."

Scott raised an eyebrow. "So, what exactly IS this operation for, if I'm not
in any way ill?"

The blue-haired one spoke. "We're gonna convert ya into a liver."

"WHAT?!" Scott didn't like the sound of that. He tried logic. "Is that some
name for a new sex-change or something?"

The black-haired one looked confused. "Uh...no...It means, we're about to
convert you into...a liver. Rather simple, actually. Zap, squish, pop, all
done. No pain."

"Wait, wait, wait." Scott shifted a bit, as much he could. "You are about to
transmutate me into, an ORGAN?"

 "Yes... Anything wrong?"

"Well, YES! >I< don't remember filling out any occupation form to become a
part of a body..."

"You didn't HAVE to. By your old medical standards, you would have been
dead. We saved you, and now we need you to fulfill a need."

"Who needs me as their liver?"

"The President of the Federation. It seems he got into an argument with
someone, and that person, in misplaced anger, cut out the president's liver and
ate it."

"Then use THAT guy as a liver! I could at least be a leg or something..."

"Well, we vaporized him. Vapor makes a terrible liver."

 "I see..."

"So, you see, we must commence." He flipped a switch. Things turned on,
apparati flipped around. Humming went on.

 "WAIT!!" screamed Scott. "What about.."
Cynthia Lacy of Treasure Island could hardly believe a customer service representative at Verizon refused to disconnect her father's telephone service until after she contacted the Consumer's Edge.

Lacy sent the phone company a death certificate, showing her father, Bill Young of Calvin, W.Va., died in June. But not until repeated phone calls and a complaint to the media did Verizon finally cut it off — last week.

It seems Lacy did not have her father's PIN (personal identification number) to access the account. So the representative refused to help her.
With a contract on Young's house, the family needed to close out the telephone bill for the incoming owners and to settle his estate. The unsettled telephone bill could hold that up.

Folks at Verizon could not believe the representative's actions, either.

Bob Elek, a spokesman for Verizon, said the representative did not handle the case properly and has since been reprimanded and given coaching.
"The account in question has been discontinued and backdated to Sept. 1," Elek said. "The daughter will receive a credit/refund for the months she paid since September."

owed to my computer

When I think of the sheer amount to work needed to put together a modern operating system it makes me never bored by my computer. My finger-tips rest on a machine containing years and years, combined lifetimes, of hard work. When I think of all this work and it's source-code on my harddrive and the fact that I have complete access to it, well I'm just amazed. Many times I've spent my day saying to myself things like "hmm.. I wonder how malloc works" and actually being able to find out. As I look over the code line by line it's kinda like looking at the stones in an egyptian pyramid or something. I imagine the sweat that's gone into each one- I imagine the debugging nightmare to get it actually working. It's pretty awesome when you think about it. Great engineering efforts have always fascinated me. Thinking about the sums of peoples' work is very exciting

How are all the BSG people enjoying it? I for one am finding it to be pretty good. From the religious aspect to the polygamy to the accepted homosexuality among the mafia (from Tauron), everything is presented upside down but in a stylish and realistic way. I also love the Larry King rapped inside of a Jay Leno T.V. host.

Anyway, even if it starts to suck it is holding me over until the return of the new V miniseries later this month. For that one, I like it so far but I think that it may run out of ideas, nothing firm but just a gut feeling.

what is every one charging for cabling?

curios.. because i think the independent work that i have been doing has been way too cheap... but with my new mind set of pricing, i do not seem to be getting as much independent work...

CAT 5 runs (NON-plenum) -> i was charging $50, but barely making a decent profit... so i was thinking $75 is reasonable...

POTS jacks surface mounted -> $50 per run... i think is reasonable, and profitable..

CCTV -> $75 per run (not including camera or DVR)

i am also getting $75 to connect door access controls for VoIP systems (the company that contracts me for this provides the equiptment - this is if the door striker is already installed, and the door is wired to the phone closet (i just install or replace the door phone and install a SIP device and relay for the door) takes about an hour or so to complete.. so i think this is reasonable... i get additional if i need to pull any wiring...

..................

my "new" rate idea is to estimate a job based on the amount of time i assume that the job will take (under normal circumstances it takes an hour or less per wire run including termination and testing) and providing an estimate of $75 - $100 per hour... IMO this rate seems reasonable, and i will not feel like i am broke all the time.... working excessive amount of hours trying to build my business - while working a full time, and part time job... i think that with the amount of hours that i put in every week i should have more to show for it than i do... i think that these rates will give me that... do they seem too excessive ...

what rates do any of you charge for similar jobs?
.............

i recently gave an estimate for 3 CCTV cameras - 2 at one location, and 1 at a different location across the street... including wiring, wire mold, 3 cameras, and an 8 channel DVR - one building i would need to make a hole from the lobby of the building into the basement (that would take a long time and likely require me to rent a major hammer drill) the estimate was for $2700 - the materials would cost about $1800-1900, i assume the job will take 2 people about 6 hours based on the obstacles running the cabling - he has not called back in about a week and a half since i provided the estimate, do you think i went over board on the price (i mostly do voice and data, so i am not too familiar with CCTV stuff, i have only done maybe a dozen CCTV jobs)

video is 3/4 of the way down, with this text underneath it :
"English, featuring Adam "Clown" Gadahn"

It's quite interesting. He talks about, among other things, thinking it was funny how the CIA offered him money to do what he deems so dear to his heart, which is to go into the center of it. He said it was like a dream come true for them to offer this so he could take advantage of his position.

New service for your phone detects a liar

Here's something I heard about which I think is about as dumb as saying 2+2=444ddd444 :

Liar Card

Quote

LiarCard is the most advanced voice analysis technology for personal use available today, giving you an indication if your subject is being truthful. You can now have a competitive edge to negotiate a sweeter deal, hire better personnel, choose a more reliable supplier, and even just to let you know if the person talking with you is not being honest on a specific issue.
In simple terms, LiarCard's patented technology detects the emotional content of speech patterns revealing the mental state and emotional makeup of the speaker.

How Do I Use LiarCard?

Dial the toll-free number from any phone and input the PIN provided upon signup.

Enter the destination number and wait for the call to be connected.

During your conversation, the voice of the person of whom you called is analyzed in real-time, during which a heartbeat pulse is played in the background which only you will hear. A buzz is also played when the called party is suspected of not telling the truth or is in an extreme state of mind.

After the call, login to the web control panel to replay calls, view the graphs and read the analysis.

Review Results

During the call, a heartbeat pulse is played in the background which only you will hear. When the called party is stressed about what is said then you'll hear it beat quicker and then slow down again if they're being truthful. A buzz is played when the called party is suspected of not telling the truth or is in an extreme state of mind.

When I heard about this "technology", I about LMAO. This thing is based on someone who is lying sounding stressed in their voice when they lie, and what if they're confident and not "stressed" but instead they're calm as a dead person? Ooops, that's what - no lie detected based on "voice stress". For pete's sake I've lied that well myself, it's not even hard to do! When they used to use lie detectors common place for job applicants in America, I'd lie repeatedly and not get detected - I'd even lie time after time, on one lie detector test to another and STILL passed.

So it's no wonder I nearly LMAO at this liar card bunk. I could easily take on the people at lair card and PROVE it won't detect a good liar. Only, and maybe at that, a weak kneed liar will get detected IMO.

This "card" is nothing more than a money making scheme, a LIE (hahaha), perpetrated on the ignorant that anything can "detect" a lie (which is akin to reading another's thoughts). It'll never happen no matter what invention comes along, never.

Edit : I really rolled my eyes when I read this on their site :

Quote

The Technology
LiarCard can detect if your subject is excited, confused, stressed, unwillingly sharing information, concentrated, anticipating your responses and even if your friend really likes you...

LiarCard, give me a damn break with the crap already.... "even if your friend really likes you...."???? Oh come on! Now THAT'S damn funny!
