Safecracking

Does anybody out there know where to get some practice safe-type combination locks to practice on? Without paying tons'o'money that is. Also, I haven't looked into it much, but do the techniques used for safecracking also work for combination padlocks?

Much appreciated

tactical clothing

I was browsing a local army surplus store and there's lots of clothing I am thinking about purchasing (tactical pants, gloves, boots). I also noticed some jackets specifically labeled with identifying logos (FBI, DEA).

Two questions (not related):

1) Does anyone know if wearing this type of jacket grounds for impersonating a federal officer, or is something more egregious (flashing a fake badge) required?

2) What special clothing do you like to wear while dumpster diving/urban exploring? It seems to me that the best type of clothing (tactical) is the most suspicious if caught trespassing? What tools do you bring (flashlights, lockpick sets, crowbars).

Water tower motion detectors

When I was younger, my bro, friends and I would climb the local water tower. It had a great view, was a good place to launch fireworks from, plus it was just fun to climb. My brother was up there one night a few years ago when an old man walked out of the woods (probably bearded and wearing flannel). The man told my brother he better get down because there was a motion detector that would alert the local PD. In all my times on the tower, I had never seen any kind of device up there, so I've been a bit incredulous. Nevertheless, I never got back up there to check it out, so I'm curious. Has anyone had experience climbing water towers and, if so, have you ever seen some sort of motion detector or alarm system?

Blueprints

I've recently gotten into urban exploration, and would like to do some research on a building I am planning on exploring (it happens to be an abandoned school). However before I begin I would like to take a look at either a floor plan or a set of blueprints. I was wondering if you guys knew where I could find these? (The building was built around 1960 and has been closed for quite a while)

A trick which is one that gets you Windows 7 for $15

I noticed a loophole, for lack of a better thing to call it, regarding operating systems and the need for recovery disks.

Someone can do this via phone or online at the site itself. Let's use HP as the target. Someone can "claim" their computer's down due to being infected and they lost their recovery disks - viola! HP offers to sell recovery disks of the operating system in question for about $15, so just order them- this can be done by calling or doing it online. The fact that you don't currently have Windows 7 and are not really infected and need to recover the computer they'll never know. What you are doing however, is using the cheaper method to obtain Windows 7 without having to pay full retail - just use the recovery disks as you would if you really were reformatting and presto! You now have Windows 7, your new upgrade, for the cheaper price of only $15.

This social engineer WILL WORK if someone did it. The computer could care less if you did an actual "upgrade" or just reformatted - either way, you get Windows 7 installed, don't you? Except this way you get it cheaper than paying full retail for upgrading.

Anyone can get a new OS this way, whether it's through HP, Dell, etc. Unless the time comes when operating systems no longer need recovery disks, that is. Till then, this backdoor exists and anyone can take advantage of it as many times as they desire to - if someone wanted to, they can obtain the newest Microsoft OS every time one is released using this method (if they felt like it). There's nothing stopping anyone from using this method - the company in question has no way to know it's a ruse, no way to check if you're getting recovery disks for an OS you "currently have" and this is exactly why it would work, every time I might add.

Now, of course I don't advocate being a "bad hacker" and actually stealing Windows 7 this way, but the backdoor to getting it via this route EXISTS anyway, which is my point.

Lebow Clothing Factory(Exploration)

Anybody ever been to Lebow's Clothing factory in Baltimore Maryland? If your local to the area its a pretty cool place to check out. Its been abandoned since the early 80's and completely untouched since closing. Its got a pretty decent explorer base and lots of computer stuff in the old offices, and suits for the gentlemen. Go here to check out some pictures of the joint. Lebow Clothing factory pics

If you do decide to check it out or want to know more def. post here, and let me know of your travels in and around Maryland. I got in through a gate in the alley way. As far as I know the hole is still there and the first door on your left has been rigged open. Good spot for first timers!

a few concerns about dumpster diving

For one thing, I am looking mainly for computer parts and whole computers, but really anything cool is awesome. To find said things though, which of the likely types of targets will actually throw out computers in a dumpster like that? Corporate offices, of which there are a ton around where I live? What about micro center? Hint: I live in one of the few places where a micro center is located. Small azn computer shops pretty much are a dumpster, but a rip at that with the prices they charge lol!

Also do a lot of these places have cameras by their dumpsters? If so, how to find them? Has dumpster diving become a real concern to many of these places?

What about parking? I figure parking in any private drive is pretty much a red flag to the paranoid cops around here. But if i have to walk too far, carrying around big things, that's a red flag too lol.

And if you haven't figured it out by now: I live somewhere within driving distance to their overland park, ks location. johnson county, the orange county of middle america.

This picture is unretouched. It looks this way because there was a huge fire, and a month or so later, the contrast of new growth through the ash makes for a crazy looking picture. We were just walking around and found this about 2 miles off the road. It is a county plate, but too rusted to have been abandoned in the fire.

Journalism Laws

Is it okay to take pictures anymore? It seems a bit harder to avoid being questioned by authorities, etc. I remember an episode of Off the Hook were a guy was obtained by police for taking pictures of a construction site for a hospital, and I really want to avoid that!

The reason why I am asking is because i was taking pictures of a grey box on the ground and was visited by three cop cars simultaneously! I mean, I used to lift Bell can lids and shoot picturs in them, but now that security seems to be beefed up everywhere you go, i guess that's not really an option anymore either. I feel like these limits and being limited are kinda overkill for normal citizens.

Anyone else have an experience with shooting pictures of anything Urban-Exploration or whatever and go through a bad experience?

Threaten to Cancel service

In about a month my internet bill is going to be rasied because of an "introductory rate". I've always heard of people calling into their ISP's and saying they're gonna cancel and end up getting offered a lower rate of service. Has anyone here tried this with success? My ISP is RoadRunner through Time Warner in Western New York. I really dont' want to call them up and threaten this and have the rep say "ok i can take care of that for you" and end up with canceled service and have to go through verizon for my internet since FIOS isn't in my area yet.

Making a pick set

Hey guys, I'm new here and very interested in getting to lock picking and urban exploration. I read some where that you can make good lock picks with a desk grinder or a Dremel I didn't want to spend all that money on a grinder and luckily I found a dremel gathering dust in the garage!

So my question is how would one go about making a set of lock picks with a dremel? Should I use hacksaw blades or windshield wiper inserts as I can get them for free?

I don't need anything fancy just a torque wrench, pick/hook, and a rake.
