The need to go N?

For those of you who know me know that I tend to tinker constantly with my network to find another way to make it cooler and more efficient than it was the last time I tampered with it. I have ranged from standard wireless B access points to custom WRT linux setups. I have tinkered with just about every possible configuration and limitation of the WRT54G's and have come across a point where I feel that maybe its time to jump up to the next level.

Why though would I need to do such a thing? Well first big issue I have is range. Our setup has to expand about 3000 square feet with at least 5MB of traffic but the preferred max is what we really want. I have used QoS to balance this along with amplified signals but really, it doesn't seem enough. Currently we support 3 active gaming systems. Outside of those systems there is the PS2 and Wii that must have reliable fast connectivity. There is an additional laptop that is used for day to day use. Add in the VoIP and the NAS and it gets to be a little bumpy. Additionally I will be looking to add full time streaming video as well which we all know will bite the network significantly. The only thing left that is not high demand is the two PSP's which is two of 3 devices still using wireles B.

Now the setup is where 2 of the major gaming systems are at the opposite end of the building from the router. Additionally one PSP and the Wii reside in the same location. hardwired to the router is the NAS and the VoIP box. The laptops 3 total (1 of them is a above mentioned gaming system) must be able to roam within the 3000 square feet range with good enough signal to have good streaming video. two systems I would like to bump up to Wireless-N PCMCIA / USB cards. The rest of the computers remain on wireless-G along with the Wii. I would like to force the NAS to remain on the 1000MB hardwire. the PS2 and VoIP remains hardwired as well, however the PS2 and VoIP are using 10/100 NIC's. Additionally the house uses standard 2006 build walls with the high end energy efficient insulation. This comes to play as upon bumping up or staying with the router I have, I will be moving it to a final resting place located in our closet where the 'OnQ' system is located. This area is as close to the cable outlet as you can get and be in the middle of the structure. This is also the first junction point within the house of the entire cabling / internal wiring, so suggests the best place to finalize the cable modem. The reason this isn't done yet is I had to figure out a 12 inch x 12 inch x 4 inch box solution for all of this to mount on top of the exisiting 'OnQ' flat wall cover using a swinging hinge design (Still in design may use side mounted solution instead with insulated wire tube.)
